The Challenge

 There are no secrets at A. Duie Pyle, the 90-plus-year-old diversified transportation services provider that ranks as one of the elite players in the Northeastern U.S. No secrets for customers, who enjoy total visibility into load status, be it serviced through A. Duie Pyle’s asset or non-asset based operation. And no secrets in how the family-owned business will continue its strong growth trajectory: by being one of the industry’s most versatile and customer-focused providers.

“One of the things that’s really important to us is offering customized solutions,” explains Ashley Fox, director of technology and financial administration for the company’s appropriately named Customized Solutions Group (CSG), which offers dedicated flatbed, brokerage and warehouse and distribution services. “We are able to fully customize what we need for each individual customer and target a market that larger carriers wouldn’t target.”

Delivering on this customer-centric model required a comprehensive portfolio of leading-edge technology solutions. As an additional challenge, the business was looking for a provider that could help minimize the need for costly internal I.T. resources.

The Solution

A. Duie Pyle turned to TMW Systems, long one of the industry’s most trusted solutions providers and a part of the global Trimble Transportation & Logistics Division, whose solutions help track and manage more than 1 million assets. 

“Moving to TMW, a Trimble company with a large R-and-D budget, our strategy was to use a hosted solution and be able to be light on IT resources,” Fox says. “We’ve really found a huge advantage both using (TMW’s) cloud services as well as TMWSuite and Appian solutions. And we’ve successfully used their Professional Services to maintain that low level of IT resource in house.”

The Result

Since going live on TMWSuite in May 2014, A. Duie Pyle has redoubled its emphasis on providing solutions tailored to the needs and preferences of each customer. That was a tall order given the company’s commitment to “going light” on internal IT headcount, but one it has tackled with great success. CSG representatives regularly encourage customers to design their own reporting and establish custom alerts within the TMWSuite platform. “We allow (customers) to see everything we can see,” Fox explains. “They feel very confident and comfortable with their carrier who is very open to them.”

In combination with TMWSuite, CSG is using Appian routing and scheduling solutions to help customers reduce freight spend. After three months with a new account, CSG runs a formal business review through which each shipment is re-routed and re-optimized through the Appian DirectRoute solution to ensure maximum efficiency and cost savings. “Sometimes the assumptions you make about a customer aren’t actually what’s happening,” Fox says, adding that in many cases this process uncovers more efficient, less costly solutions.

TMW technology is playing important roles in helping grow A. Duie Pyle’s brokerage business, as well, by enabling greater flexibility and faster response to requests for pricing. “My team is able to focus on a customer need, provide a quote or a solution to the customer first and then think about whether it’s going to be an asset or a non-asset solution that we continue with,” explains Anna Hummel, director of brokerage. “We’ve found that speed in response to customer quote requests or customer emergencies has helped us win the freight as opposed to worrying about which truck or which driver is going to handle (it).”

Once the business is won and the solution finalized, according to Hummel, “we literally check one box (in TMWSuite) and that order is moved from a brokerage quote to an asset load.”
